Chapter 11 - THE DAY GRAHAM LOST CONTROL

Graham was questioned by investigators.
Then his campaign suspended operations.
Several donors withdrew support.
Whitmore Development faced financial scrutiny.
His attorneys denied the allegations.
But the investigation continued.
One afternoon, Graham appeared outside my attorney's office.
I was leaving with Elena when I saw him.
He looked exhausted.
His tie was crooked.
His eyes were bloodshot.
“Evelyn.”
I stopped.
Elena remained beside me.
Graham stepped forward.
“We need to talk.”
I shook my head.
“Please contact my attorney.”
His expression tightened.
“After everything I've done for you?”
I felt the familiar guilt rise.
Then I remembered Noah's voice.
Finally.
I took a breath.
“I didn't ask you to control my life.”
Graham stared.
“I loved you.”
I looked at him.
“Then why was I afraid of you?”
For the first time, he had no answer.

I turned away.
And kept walking.
