Chapter 15 - THE LIFE THEY CHOSE TOGETHER

Five years later, the Duca estate was no longer a fortress.
The gates remained.
But the guards were fewer.
The rooms were brighter.
And the house was filled with laughter.
Alejandro had left the criminal world behind.
He managed a smaller group of legitimate businesses.
He spent more time with Leo.
And he had learned that being a father required patience more than power.
Sophia had become an early childhood specialist.
She worked with children who needed individualized support.
She also helped families understand sensory differences without shame.
Isabella lived nearby.
She visited often.
And every Sunday, the family gathered for dinner.
One evening, Leo sat beside Sophia at the piano.
He was nine now.
Tall for his age.
Curious.
And full of questions.
“Aunt Sophia?”
“Yes?”
“Can you sing the song?”
Sophia smiled.
“Which one?”
Leo rolled his eyes.
“The old one.”
She laughed.
“Of course.”
Isabella joined them.
Alejandro stood near the doorway.
As the familiar Sicilian melody filled the room, he closed his eyes.
He remembered the restaurant.
The screaming child.
The frightened waitress.
The song that had stopped him cold.
And the name that had brought his sister home.
When the lullaby ended, Leo looked toward his father.
“Papa?”
Alejandro smiled.
“Yes, little lion?”
“Why are you crying?”
Alejandro laughed softly.
“Because I'm happy.”
Leo frowned.
“People cry when they're happy?”
“Sometimes.”
Sophia smiled.
“Especially when they've waited a long time.”
Leo considered that.
Then nodded.
“Okay.”
He climbed off the piano bench.
Walked toward Alejandro.
And hugged him.
Alejandro held his son tightly.
Across the room, Sophia leaned against her mother's shoulder.
Isabella kissed her forehead.
For twenty-two years, they'd been separated by lies.
For years, they'd lived in fear.
But now they were together.
May you like
And the song that once belonged to a frightened little girl had become the sound of a family finding its way home.
THE END.
