Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED HIS PROTECTION
Sophia refused Alejandro's offer of a private apartment.
She refused his money.
And she refused to become another person living under Duca security.
Alejandro stared.
“It's for your safety.”
She shook her head.
“I know.”
“Then why refuse?”
Sophia looked at him.
“Because my grandmother spent her life running from men who claimed they were protecting the family.”
Alejandro went silent.
She continued.
“I won't trade one kind of fear for another.”
He studied her.
Then nodded.
“Okay.”
Sophia blinked.
“Okay?”
“Yes.”
He stepped back.
“You decide where you live.”
Her eyes filled.
Alejandro continued.
“And if you want my help, you ask.”
Sophia smiled.
For the first time, she saw the difference between the man her grandmother had feared and the uncle standing before her.
He was learning.
