Chapter 6 - THE FOUNDATION OF LIES
Claire Mercer had founded a children's literacy charity before Noah was born.
It funded libraries.
After-school programs.
And reading support for children in underserved neighborhoods.
After her death, Daniel assumed control of its financial operations.
Cole had continued donating money.
He believed he was honoring Claire's memory.
But the forensic review uncovered suspicious transactions.
Funds intended for children's programs had been diverted through shell companies.
Some payments appeared connected to criminal associates.
Others were linked to real estate purchases.
The charity had become a financial instrument.
Claire had discovered the scheme.
And Daniel had apparently tried to silence her.
Cole stared at the records.
He felt sick.
His wife's name had been used to conceal wrongdoing.
Her charity.
Her legacy.
Everything she cared about.
He turned toward Anthony.
“Find every family that lost services because of this.”
Anthony nodded.
“And Daniel?”
Cole looked toward the window.
“We give the evidence to investigators.”
Anthony stared.
“Boss?”
Cole's voice hardened.
“Claire died trying to expose this.”

He swallowed.
“I'm not going to bury the truth with her.”
