Elena considered leaving the Mercer estate.
She had every reason to.
Her son had been threatened.
She had been attacked.
And the house was connected to a criminal world she had never wanted to enter.
Cole understood.
He offered financial support and help finding another position.
Elena refused the idea that money could solve everything.
“I don't want to be bought,” she said.
Cole nodded.
“I know.”
She looked toward the garden.
“Eli loves Noah.”
Cole smiled sadly.
“Noah loves him, too.”
Elena hesitated.
“And I care about your son.”
Cole looked at her.
“I know.”
She swallowed.
“But I have to protect mine.”
He nodded.
“Then we'll make sure you can leave safely if that's what you choose.”
Elena studied him.
For the first time, she believed he meant it.
