Chapter 14 - THE LOVE THAT GREW QUIETLY

Cole and Elena's relationship changed gradually.
There was no sudden confession.
No dramatic kiss in the rain.
Just conversations.
Shared meals.
Long evenings after the boys fell asleep.
Cole learned about Elena's late husband.
How they'd met in high school.
How he'd worked as an electrician.
How illness had changed their lives.
Elena learned about Claire.
Her kindness.
Her stubbornness.
Her love of music.
And the way she used to sing while cooking.
They didn't try to replace the people they'd lost.
They simply allowed themselves to care again.
When Elena eventually left her employment at the estate to pursue training in family support services, Cole respected her decision.
They remained in contact because of the boys.
Months later, after their professional relationship had ended, Cole asked her to dinner.
Elena smiled.
“Are you asking me on a date?”
He looked nervous.
“Yes.”
She laughed.
“Cole Mercer, are you nervous?”
He smiled.
“Terrified.”
She considered him.
Then said:
“Good.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“Good?”
“It means you understand that I can say no.”
Cole laughed softly.
“Yes.”
May you like
Elena smiled.
“Then my answer is yes.”
