Chapter 5 - THE CHILD WHO SAW EVERYTHING

Noah remembered more than anyone expected.
He remembered Daniel visiting the music box.
He remembered the man opening the glass case with a small key.
And he remembered a conversation from the night before the box broke.
Daniel had been speaking on the phone near the library.
Noah was hiding behind the curtains.
He heard Daniel say:
“The evidence is still in the house.”
Then:
“Cole doesn't know.”
Noah didn't understand what evidence meant.
But he understood the way Daniel sounded.
Angry.
Afraid.
Dangerous.
When Daniel noticed him, he smiled.
Then crouched.
“Little man, you didn't hear anything.”
Noah nodded.
Daniel continued.
“Good boys keep secrets.”
Noah remembered that sentence.
Because his mother used to tell him something different.
Good boys tell the truth, even when it's hard.
When Daniel later ordered him to retrieve the silver cylinder, Noah tried.
But the music box slipped.
It shattered.
And Eli rushed into the hallway.
Daniel looked furious.
Noah panicked.
Then Eli stepped forward.
“I did it.”
Now, sitting beside his father, Noah told the entire story.
Cole listened without interrupting.
When Noah finished, he whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
Noah looked confused.
“For what?”
Cole's eyes filled.
“For not noticing you were scared.”
Noah began crying.

Cole pulled him close.
And for the first time in three years, father and son cried together.
