Chapter 6 - THE DOCTOR WHO NEVER TOLD THE WHOLE TRUTH

Sophia's medical evaluation produced unexpected findings.
Her original spinal injury had been serious.
But the new imaging and neurological assessments suggested that the initial prognosis had been too absolute.
There was evidence of preserved nerve function.
Her muscles were weak from years of limited use.
Her balance was poor.
And she had developed a profound fear of falling.
The doctors explained that the brief run at the gala did not mean her paralysis had been imaginary or that she was suddenly cured.
It meant her remaining abilities deserved a fresh, comprehensive rehabilitation plan.
I sat beside Sophia's bed while the specialists explained their findings.
"Why didn't anyone tell me this before?" I asked.
Dr. Miriam Ellis, a pediatric rehabilitation physician, answered carefully.
"Recovery can be difficult to predict. But we need to review the earlier records before drawing conclusions."
The review uncovered something troubling.
Two years earlier, a specialist had recommended additional testing and intensive gait training.
The referral had been canceled.
The cancellation was recorded as a family decision.
My signature appeared on the form.
I had never signed it.
I stared at the document.
"Who submitted this?"
Dr. Ellis looked uncomfortable.
"The record shows it came through your daughter's medical coordinator."
I knew the name.
Dr. Victor Hale.
He had overseen Sophia's treatment since the accident.
He had been recommended by Dominic.
That evening, I called Hale.
"Why was Sophia's rehabilitation referral canceled?"
He hesitated.
"We believed it would cause unnecessary distress."
"Who decided that?"
"Her care team."
"The form says I signed it."
Silence.
I looked at the document.
"Did you forge my signature?"
Hale's voice changed.
"Luca, you don't understand the pressures involved."
My blood went cold.
"Explain them."
He said nothing.
Then ended the call.
I stared at the phone.
My daughter had spent three years in a wheelchair.
Not because a waitress possessed a miracle.
May you like
But because the people entrusted with her care may have interfered with her chance to recover.
And the man who had recommended those people was Dominic Rinaldi.
