Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE THAT FINALLY MEANT SOMETHING

Two years passed.

Sophia turned ten.

She continued therapy.

She walked independently for short distances and used mobility aids when needed.

She became a confident, outspoken child who loved painting, swimming, and telling her father when he was being unreasonable.

Hannah completed her studies.

She began working in pediatric rehabilitation.

She helped children and families understand that progress wasn't always a straight line.

Some days were difficult.

But she loved her work.

I continued restructuring my businesses.

I separated legitimate operations from criminal activities.

I cooperated with investigations.

I accepted that repairing harm required more than donations and public statements.

My relationship with Hannah grew slowly.

We argued.

We apologized.

We learned to listen.

One evening, we sat beside Lake Michigan.

The water reflected the city lights.

Hannah looked at me.

"Do you ever think about the gala?"

"Every day."

She smiled faintly.

"Sophia was so brave."

I nodded.

"She still is."

Hannah leaned against me.

I took her hand.

"Hannah."

"Yes?"

"Would you ever consider building a life with me?"

She looked up.

"What kind of life?"

I smiled.

"One where you never have to give up your work, your independence, or your voice."

Her eyes filled.

"That sounds like a good beginning."

May you like

I kissed her forehead.

"Then let's begin."
