Chapter 5 - THE FIRST SIGN

Leonardo's next hearing assessment changed everything.
The specialists confirmed that he had profound sensorineural hearing loss, complicated by persistent middle-ear fluid.
The team recommended treatment for the fluid and continued early hearing support.
They also discussed cochlear implant candidacy, emphasizing that outcomes varied and that access to language should never be delayed while awaiting medical decisions.
Dante listened.
He asked questions.
He took notes.
And when the audiologist demonstrated a simple sign for milk, Dante practiced until he could make it correctly.
Clare watched from the doorway.
Something warm spread through her chest.
That evening, Dante sat on the nursery floor with Leonardo.
He held a bottle.
Then signed milk.
Leonardo watched his hands.
Dante repeated the sign.
The baby reached toward him.
Dante smiled.
"That's right, little lion."
Clare leaned against the doorframe.
"You're getting good at that."
Dante looked up.
"He's a better teacher than I expected."
She laughed.
Maya entered carrying her rabbit.
"Can I learn?"
Dante nodded.
"Of course."
Soon all three were sitting on the floor.
Clare taught Maya a simple sign for more.
Maya repeated it enthusiastically.
Leonardo watched.
Then he smiled.
It was such a small moment.
No miracle.
No dramatic recovery.
Just a baby responding to people who were finally learning how to communicate with him.
But Dante looked as though someone had handed him the world.
Later, Clare found him in the kitchen.
He was staring at his phone.
"What's wrong?"
He showed her a photograph.
Alessia holding newborn Leonardo.
"She never got to see him smile like that."
Clare's heart ached.
Dante set the phone down.
"I was so focused on making him hear that I forgot he was already trying to communicate with me."
Clare shook her head.
"You were grieving."
"That's not an excuse."
"No. But it's part of the truth."
He looked at her.
"How do you always know what to say?"
"I don't."
She smiled sadly.
"I just know what it's like to feel invisible."
Dante reached across the counter.
His fingers brushed hers.
Neither moved away.
For a moment, the kitchen seemed completely still.
Then Maya shouted from the hallway.
"Mama! Leo smiled at my bunny!"
Clare pulled her hand back.
May you like
Dante laughed softly.
And for the first time since Alessia died, the sound of laughter filled his house.
