Chapter 13 - THE SOUND OF A FATHER'S VOICE

Leonardo's medical journey continued.

After treatment for his middle-ear condition, further testing confirmed persistent profound sensorineural hearing loss.

The medical team discussed hearing technology, cochlear implants, rehabilitation, and long-term communication support.

Dante and Clare learned everything they could.

They also met Deaf adults and families raising deaf children.

One woman, a teacher named Giulia, told Dante something he never forgot.

"Your son doesn't need to become hearing to have a beautiful life."

Dante looked at Leonardo.

Giulia continued.

"He needs language, love, and people who believe in him."

Dante nodded.

"Then that's what he'll have."

After a thorough evaluation, Dante decided to pursue cochlear implantation while continuing sign language and visual communication.

The surgery was completed without major complications.

Weeks later, the external processor was activated.

Clare stood beside Dante in the audiology room.

Leonardo sat on his father's lap.

The audiologist explained that the first activation would be only the beginning of a long process.

There might be no dramatic response.

The child would need time, adjustments, and therapy to learn what the new signals meant.

Dante nodded.

Then the processor was activated.

Leonardo blinked.

His little hands moved.

He looked startled.

The audiologist adjusted the settings.

Dante leaned forward.

"Leo?"

The baby didn't turn toward his voice.

Not yet.

Dante swallowed.

Then he signed Papa.

Leonardo looked at his hands.

And smiled.

Dante's eyes filled.

Clare squeezed his shoulder.

"He's looking at you."

Dante laughed through his tears.

"Yes."

He kissed Leonardo's forehead.

"I'm right here, little lion."

There was no instant cure.

No miraculous sentence.

No sudden transformation.

But there was a father who finally understood that communication was more than sound.

And a little boy who would never have to wonder whether he was loved.
