Chapter 14 - THE WOMAN WHO CHOSE HERSELF

One year after leaving Ohio, Clare stood outside a hospital in Rome wearing a nurse's uniform.

She had completed the necessary professional steps to return to clinical work in Italy, supported by additional training and supervised practice.

Her first day was terrifying.

Not because she doubted her skills.

But because she had spent years being told she wasn't capable of making decisions without Richard.

Now she was standing on her own.

Her supervisor greeted her warmly.

"Ready?"

Clare smiled.

"Very."

That evening, she returned home exhausted.

Maya ran into her arms.

"Mama!"

Clare lifted her.

"How was school?"

"I made a painting!"

"Of what?"

"Our family."

Maya proudly displayed a drawing.

There was Clare.

Maya.

Leonardo.

Dante.

And a large yellow sun.

Clare stared at it.

Her eyes filled.

Dante appeared in the doorway.

"Everything okay?"

She nodded.

"Perfect."

He looked at the drawing.

Then smiled.

Maya pointed to the figures.

"That's Mama. That's me. That's Leo. That's Dante."

Dante crouched beside her.

"And who's the sun?"

Maya grinned.

"Everybody's happy."

Clare covered her mouth.

Dante looked up at her.

Neither spoke.

They didn't need to.

Later that night, he found Clare standing on the balcony.

"I have something for you."

She turned.

He handed her a folder.

Inside were documents establishing a charitable fund for families escaping domestic abuse.

The organization would provide legal assistance, emergency housing, and employment support.

Clare stared at the papers.

"What is this?"

"Something I've been planning."

"Dante—"

"It's independent. Professional trustees. Outside oversight. And I want you to help shape it, if you choose."

She looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because you know what people need when they're trying to start over."

Clare began crying.

Dante stepped closer.

"I can't change what happened to you."

"No."

"But maybe we can help make sure someone else doesn't have to face it alone."

May you like

She embraced him.

For the first time, the pain of her past felt like something she could transform into purpose.
