Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH ABOUT ALESSIA

The evidence against Victor grew stronger.
Financial investigators uncovered forged invoices, secret communications, and payments connected to the explosion.
But the most important discovery came from Matteo Rinaldi.
He was alive.
And he had been hiding in southern Italy.
When authorities located him, he agreed to testify.
Matteo explained that Alessia had been gathering evidence against Victor's fraudulent foundation.
She planned to hand the records to investigators.
But she also suspected something more serious.
Victor had been using the charity to move money connected to organized criminal activity.
Alessia wanted Dante to leave that world behind.
She believed their son deserved a different future.
Matteo handed investigators a sealed envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Addressed to Dante.
The letter was written in Alessia's handwriting.
Dante opened it with trembling hands.
My love,
If you are reading this, something has happened that prevented me from telling you the truth myself.
I know you believe the world you built is the only way to keep us safe.
But I have watched you become a prisoner of your own power.
I want our son to grow up knowing kindness, not fear.
I want him to know that his father was capable of choosing something better.
And I want you to understand that I never needed you to be the most feared man in New York.
I only needed you to come home.
Dante stopped reading.
Tears blurred his vision.
Clare sat beside him.
He finished the letter silently.
Then he folded it carefully.
For a long time, he stared at the floor.
Finally, he whispered, "She knew."
Clare touched his hand.
"She loved you."
Dante shook his head.
"I wasted so much time."
Clare leaned closer.
"You still have time."
He looked at her.
May you like
"To do what?"
"To become the father she believed you could be."
