Chapter 9 - THE MAN WHO FINALLY TOLD THE TRUTH

Daniel Mercer was arrested two weeks later.
Investigators located him after tracing financial activity connected to a relative's property.
He was taken into custody without violence.
The charges and investigations involved suspected fraud, financial misconduct, and connections to the threats against Isabella.
Daniel denied responsibility.
His attorneys challenged the evidence.
The legal process began.
Adrien cooperated with investigators.
He provided records.
Testified when required.
And refused to interfere with the case.
One evening, Marco approached him.
"Daniel's lawyers want a private meeting."
Adrien looked up.
"About what?"
"A settlement."
Adrien's expression hardened.
"With whom?"
"Your company."
Adrien shook his head.
"Tell them to speak to our attorneys."
Marco nodded.
Later, Isabella found Adrien standing in the library.
He looked exhausted.
"Long day?"
He smiled faintly.
"Very."
She approached.
"Do you regret it?"
He frowned.
"What?"
"Turning everything over."
Adrien considered.
Then shook his head.
"No."
He looked at her.
"I regret not asking questions sooner."
Isabella nodded.
"My father would've liked that answer."
Adrien smiled sadly.
"I wish I'd met him."
She looked down.
"He would've argued with you."
Adrien laughed softly.
"About what?"
May you like
"Everything."
For the first time, they laughed together without fear.
