Chapter 11 - THE FALL OF ANTHONY VESCARI

Anthony Vescari's trial began the following spring.
The evidence against him was extensive.
Financial records.
Witness testimony.
Communications connecting his associates to fraud and violent crimes.
Claire testified.
Dominic testified.
Several former employees cooperated with investigators.
Anthony's attorneys tried to discredit Claire.
They suggested she had misunderstood the records.
She calmly explained the accounting patterns.
Then produced the supporting documentation.
The courtroom fell silent.
The prosecutor asked one final question.
“Miss Bennett, why did you continue investigating after receiving threats?”
Claire looked toward the jury.
“Because I was hired to do a job.”
She paused.
“And because people who think they can frighten women into silence are often surprised when those women refuse.”
Dominic watched from the gallery.
His expression softened.
He had never been prouder.
When Anthony was convicted on the principal charges, Claire exhaled.
Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.
She ignored them.
Dominic approached.
“Are you all right?”
She smiled.
“Better than all right.”
