Chapter 9 - THE DAY MASSIMO STOOD

It happened on a Thursday.

Not dramatically.

Not with music.

Not with a miraculous recovery.

Just a controlled rehabilitation session.

Massimo had spent weeks improving trunk stability, leg activation, endurance, and transfer skills.

His rehabilitation physician had cleared him for supported standing practice.

We used appropriate equipment and assistance.

I explained each step.

He listened.

Then we began.

Massimo rose into a supported standing position.

His knees trembled.

His breathing quickened.

But he remained upright with assistance.

For several seconds, he stared straight ahead.

Then he looked down.

His eyes filled.

“I'm standing.”

I smiled.

“With support.”

He laughed.

“Don't ruin the moment.”

I laughed too.

He looked at me.

For a moment, the mansion disappeared.

The guards.

The money.

The family secrets.

All of it.

There was only a man who had feared he'd never stand again.

And a woman who had helped him take one difficult step toward independence.

Massimo whispered:

“Thank you.”

I smiled.

“You did the work.”

He shook his head.

“You made me believe I could.”

I looked at him.

“No, Massimo.”

May you like

My voice softened.

“You decided to try.”
