Massimo contacted an independent investigator.
Not one connected to the Pascale organization.
A former transportation safety specialist reviewed the crash records.
The findings raised questions.
The vehicle's maintenance history contained unexplained alterations.
The brake inspection documentation was incomplete.
And the official report relied heavily on Luca's account.
Massimo read the findings in silence.
Then looked at me.
“He lied.”
I hesitated.
“The evidence raises concerns. It doesn't prove everything yet.”
Massimo shook his head.
“I know my brother.”
His voice broke.
“I raised him.”
I sat beside him.
“He was sixteen when our father died.”
Massimo stared at the report.
“I promised our mother I'd take care of him.”
He swallowed.
“And now I don't know whether he tried to kill me.”
I didn't answer.
There was nothing useful to say.
Massimo covered his face.
For several minutes, he sat motionless.
Then he looked up.
“I want the truth.”
I nodded.
“Then let the investigators find it.”
