Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO LIVE AGAIN

A year passed.

I completed my doctorate.

Massimo continued rehabilitation with an independent clinical team.

His progress was meaningful but incomplete.

He could perform more daily activities independently.

He used mobility aids.

He practiced walking short distances with appropriate assistance and equipment.

But he still relied on his wheelchair for much of his mobility.

And he no longer treated that as failure.

He had also begun rebuilding his life outside organized crime.

He sold several businesses.

Resolved legal matters through his attorneys.

And focused on legitimate work.

The process was complicated.

There were consequences.

But he kept moving forward.

One afternoon, I received a letter.

Inside was a photograph.

Massimo stood beside a rehabilitation treadmill, supported by a harness and clinical staff.

On the back, he'd written:

Still working. Still stubborn. Still grateful.

I laughed.

Then cried.

Because I remembered the man who had insulted me the moment we met.

The man who refused to let anyone touch his legs.

May you like

The man who believed needing help made him weak.

And I realized how far he'd come.
