Chapter 9 - THE TRANSLATION THAT BROKE THE CASE

Sergei Volkov remained at large.

Victor Hale had been arrested, but investigators still needed evidence connecting Volkov directly to the trafficking operation.

Then Mira received another message.

A recording.

Russian voices.

A conversation between Sergei and Victor.

The audio was poor.

Background noise obscured several words.

But Mira recognized the dialect.

She contacted investigators immediately.

A forensic audio specialist helped prepare the recording for analysis.

Mira worked with qualified translators to interpret the language.

The conversation included coded references to shipments, payments, and the planned ambush at Vesuvio.

One phrase was particularly important.

Sergei referred to the waitress as the scholar with the ears.

Mira felt cold.

He knew who she was.

He had known for longer than she'd realized.

Investigators reviewed the recording's provenance and authenticity before using it.

Eventually, the evidence helped strengthen the case against Volkov and his associates.

But it also revealed something else.

Sergei had been searching for Mira's unpublished thesis.

He believed it contained information that could expose the coded language used by his network.

Mira stared at the transcript.

“So that's why he wanted me dead.”

The detective nodded.

“You were a threat before you ever entered that room.”

Mira looked down.

For years, she'd believed her research was worthless.

Now she understood that the wrong people had recognized its value.

And that realization changed everything.
