Chapter 5 - THE SHIPMENT THAT WASN'T CARGO

The investigation moved quickly.
Authorities reviewed the manifest and the information Mira had provided.
The document appeared to reference a shipping container scheduled to arrive at a private terminal outside the city.
Dante learned that one of his logistics companies had been listed as the receiving agent.
He stared at the paperwork.
“Who authorized this?”
His operations manager, Victor Hale, shifted nervously.
“Standard freight contract.”
Dante looked at him.
“Who signed it?”
Victor hesitated.
“Your office.”
Dante's expression hardened.
“I didn't.”
The forged authorization became a major problem.
Someone inside his organization had used his name.
Mira reviewed the language in the manifest with investigators.
She identified several coded expressions suggesting that the shipment involved people being transported against their will.
Authorities organized an operation.
Dante was instructed not to interfere.
For once, he obeyed.
When the container was opened, investigators found frightened people who appeared to have been trafficked across borders.
Medical teams and victim-support specialists were called.
Mira sat in the secure apartment when the detective called.
He didn't provide identifying details.
But he confirmed that her interpretation had helped locate potential victims.
She covered her mouth.
For years, her research had been dismissed as obscure.
Unfundable.
Impractical.
Now it had helped save lives.
She cried.
Not from fear.
From relief.
Then her phone rang again.
Dante.
“Mira.”
“Yes?”
“You were right.”
She closed her eyes.
“Were they alive?”
“Yes.”
She began crying harder.
Dante's voice softened.
“You did something extraordinary.”
Mira shook her head.
“I translated a document.”
“No.”
He paused.
“You noticed people everyone else had been trained not to see.”
For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Then she whispered:
“Someone finally listened.”
