Chapter 7 - THE GIRL WHO NEVER CAME HOME

The case became personal when Mira recognized a name.

Investigators had released limited information about the rescued victims through appropriate channels.

One woman had asked to contact a former university researcher who spoke her native language.

That researcher was Mira.

The woman was twenty-one.

Her name was Anya Sokolova.

She had disappeared from a student exchange program nearly two years earlier.

Mira remembered the case.

It had been mentioned in a linguistic research forum.

A young woman who spoke several languages.

A scholarship student.

Missing after accepting a job offer abroad.

Now Anya sat across from Mira in a support center.

She looked frightened.

Mira spoke gently in Russian.

“You're safe here.”

Anya's eyes filled.

“I don't know who to trust.”

Mira nodded.

“You don't have to trust everyone.”

She paused.

“But there are people here whose job is to help you.”

Anya began crying.

Mira listened.

She didn't demand details.

She didn't ask Anya to relive anything she wasn't ready to discuss.

Instead, she helped interpret questions from the support team.

For the first time, Mira understood that language could be more than an academic subject.

It could be a bridge back to safety.

Later, Anya took her hand.

“Thank you.”

Mira smiled through tears.

“You're welcome.”

Outside the center, Dante waited near a black sedan.

Mira stopped.

“You didn't need to come.”

“I know.”

She studied him.

“Then why?”

He hesitated.

“Because I wanted to make sure you had a ride.”

Mira smiled faintly.

“You're learning to ask instead of order.”

Dante looked almost embarrassed.

“Slowly.”

May you like

She laughed.

And for the first time, the sound didn't feel dangerous.
