Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO HAD TO LOSE HIS EMPIRE

Dante's cooperation with investigators had consequences.

Several business partners withdrew.

Financial accounts were frozen pending review.

Contracts were suspended.

And his criminal associates began questioning his leadership.

Marco confronted him.

“You're destroying everything.”

Dante looked up.

“Everything?”

Marco gestured toward the city.

“The docks. The warehouses. The organization.”

Dante stared through the window.

For years, he'd believed those things defined him.

Now he thought about the people found inside the shipping container.

About Anya.

About Mira.

About the waitress who had risked her life because she understood a sentence nobody else could.

He turned.

“If keeping the empire means protecting people like Victor Hale, then it deserves to fall.”

Marco went silent.

Dante continued.

“I won't pretend I'm innocent.”

He looked down.

“But I can decide what I do next.”

Over the following months, Dante worked with legal counsel to separate legitimate businesses from criminal operations.

He accepted scrutiny.

He stepped away from leadership of the unlawful organization.

And he cooperated with the authorities in the trafficking investigation.

The process was painful.

He lost money.

Influence.

And people he'd once called friends.

But he also began sleeping through the night.

For the first time in years, he no longer woke wondering which betrayal would arrive before breakfast.

One evening, Mira asked him:

“Do you regret it?”

Dante looked at her.

“Losing the empire?”

She nodded.

He considered.

“Sometimes.”

Mira waited.

Then he smiled faintly.

“But I regret what I did to build it more.”

She looked at him for a long moment.

May you like

Then nodded.

“That's an answer I can respect.”
