Chapter 9 - THE BETRAYAL BEHIND THE FAMILY ALLIANCE

Carlo Marino had been hiding financial records for decades.
The evidence revealed that he had used several companies to conceal illegal transactions.
Thomas Hartwell discovered the scheme.
Alessandro Marino had planned to confront Carlo.
But before he could, Pier 17 burned.
Thomas died three days later.
Vincent's father died years afterward, never publicly revealing what he knew.
The truth was complicated.
And painful.
Vincent sat in his study reviewing documents.
I stood beside him.
“Do you think Carlo killed my father?”
He looked at me.
“I don't know.”
I swallowed.
“But you suspect him.”
Vincent nodded.
“Yes.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then I asked:
“What will you do?”
Vincent looked down.
A year earlier, I knew what his answer would have been.
Violence.
Revenge.
Blood.
But now he looked at me.
And said:
“We'll gather evidence.”
I stared.
He continued.
“And we'll take it to people who can act on it.”
My eyes filled.
Vincent smiled faintly.
“Surprised?”
I nodded.
“A little.”
He took my hand.
“I'm trying to become someone you can trust.”
May you like
I swallowed.
And for the first time, I believed him.
