Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT VINCENT ALMOST LOST HER

The danger escalated when someone tried to force my car off the road.
I was driving home from work.
A dark SUV appeared behind me.
It followed for several blocks.
Then it accelerated.
I gripped the steering wheel.
My heart raced.
I called emergency services.
Then Vincent.
He answered immediately.
“Evelyn?”
My voice shook.
“Someone's following me.”
His expression changed.
“Where are you?”
I gave him the street.
He spoke calmly.
“Stay on the line with emergency services.”
I nodded.
The SUV moved closer.
I turned onto a busy avenue.
Headlights flashed.
A horn blared.
Then the SUV disappeared into traffic.
I pulled into a well-lit gas station.
Police arrived minutes later.
Vincent arrived shortly afterward.
He stepped out of his car.
Saw me.
And stopped.
For a moment, his expression broke.
“Evelyn.”
I began crying.
He approached.
“Can I?”
I nodded.
He wrapped his arms around me.
Held me tightly.
For a long time, neither spoke.
Then Vincent whispered:
“I thought I was going to lose you.”
I looked up.
His eyes were wet.
I touched his face.
“I'm here.”
He closed his eyes.
For the first time, the man everyone feared looked genuinely frightened.
Not for his power.
Not for his reputation.
May you like
For me.
And I realized I was falling in love with him.
