Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO WALKED INTO THE LION'S DEN

The final evidence was hidden in an old storage facility.

Harold had remembered a safety deposit box connected to Thomas Hartwell.

We obtained access through the proper legal process.

Inside were documents.

Financial records.

Letters.

And a small cassette tape.

I stared.

Vincent looked at me.

“Your father left this.”

My hands shook as I picked it up.

The recording contained Thomas's voice.

He described the illegal financial scheme.

The threats.

The pressure to remain silent.

Then he said something that made me cry.

“If anything happens to me, tell Evelyn I loved her.”

I covered my mouth.

The recording continued.

“I wanted her to grow up free.”

Vincent took my hand.

For twenty-two years, I'd wanted to hear my father's voice again.

Now I was hearing it.

And learning that he'd been trying to protect me.

I began sobbing.

Vincent held me.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Then I whispered:

“We have to finish this.”

Vincent nodded.

May you like

“Yes.”

And together, we took the evidence to investigators.
