Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH BENEATH THE SKIN

The medical investigation uncovered the purpose of the second operation.
The metallic fragment removed from Gabriel's spine was consistent with a small surgical implant.
It wasn't listed in any official record.
Dr. Sloan explained that the implant's exact role couldn't be established from the fragment alone.
But the combination of the concealed incision, missing documentation, and postoperative neurological decline raised serious concerns about an unauthorized procedure.
Then a former clinic employee came forward.
Her name was Laura Bennett.
She had worked as a surgical technician.
And she'd been present during Gabriel's second operation.
She met investigators with her attorney.
Her hands trembled as she spoke.
“Dr. Vale said the procedure was necessary.”
Dr. Sloan asked:
“Necessary for what?”
Laura swallowed.
“He said the patient needed spinal stabilization.”
“Was that documented?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Laura looked down.
“Because Vincent Moretti told them not to record it.”
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“I heard Vincent say Gabriel had become a problem.”
My stomach tightened.
Laura continued.
“He said the family needed someone who could lead without questioning him.”
Luca's expression darkened.
“And Gabriel?”

Laura looked at us.
“He said Gabriel would be easier to control if he couldn't walk.”
