Chapter 7 - THE WILL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Luca's attorney uncovered the first major clue.
His grandfather, Alessandro Varenna, had established a family trust decades earlier.
The trust controlled significant portions of the legitimate Varenna businesses.
Its succession terms were unusual.
Vittorio held managerial authority during his lifetime.
But Luca's children, if any, would eventually become beneficiaries of a protected inheritance structure that Vittorio could not freely redirect.
If Luca died without descendants, other branches of the family would receive substantial interests.
Luca stared at the documents.
“So my father had a financial reason to believe I would never have children.”
His attorney nodded.
“Potentially.”
I looked at Luca.
“Would that explain the diagnosis?”
“Not by itself,” the attorney said. “We need evidence of what actually happened.”
Luca closed the folder.
His expression had gone cold.
“For twelve years, my father told me I couldn't become a father.”
He looked toward the window.
“And for twelve years, he kept me away from the original medical records.”
I reached for his hand.
“Luca.”
He turned.
I swallowed.
“Whatever happened, we don't have to become like him.”
His expression softened.
Then he nodded.
“No.”
May you like
He looked down at my stomach.
“We don't.”
