Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

My mother told me what she remembered.

Twelve years earlier, Luca had been rushed to St. Agnes after a violent accident near the Boston waterfront.

He had suffered multiple injuries.

There had been emergency surgery.

Security guards outside his room.

And a father who demanded absolute control over who could speak to his son.

My mother had been working the night shift.

She remembered Luca because he was young.

Terrified.

And kept asking whether he would be able to walk again.

But she remembered something else.

A disagreement between two physicians.

One believed Luca's injuries might affect fertility.

The other insisted the long-term outcome couldn't be determined without further testing.

My mother had overheard Vittorio demanding a definitive written statement.

“He wanted the records to say Luca could never have children,” she whispered.

I stared.

“Why?”

She shook her head.

“I didn't know.”

“Did you report it?”

“I told my supervisor what I'd heard. I never knew what happened afterward.”

My hands began trembling.

“Mom, why didn't you tell me?”

She looked ashamed.

“Because I didn't know you were marrying that same young man until I saw his photograph.”

I stared at her.

“And Teresa?”

My mother swallowed.

“She said the truth had been buried for years.”

I leaned closer.

“What truth?”

My mother looked directly into my eyes.

“She said Luca's father was afraid of grandchildren.”

I froze.

“Why?”

My mother shook her head.

“I don't know.”

But I knew one thing.

The lie wasn't simply about Luca's ability to have children.

It was about inheritance.

Power.

And a family empire someone had been desperate to control.
