Chapter 15 - THE MARRIAGE THAT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BECOME LOVE

One year after Sofia's birth, Luca took me back to the office where we'd signed our marriage contract.
The enormous desk was still there.
The floor-to-ceiling windows.
The view of Boston Harbor.
Everything looked the same.
Except us.
Luca stood beside the desk.
“Do you remember this room?”
I smiled.
“Unfortunately.”
He laughed.
“You hated me.”
“I was terrified of you.”
“That's worse.”
I smiled.
“You were very intimidating.”
He looked amused.
“Was?”
I stepped closer.
“Now I know you cry at children's cartoons.”
Luca laughed.
Then reached into his desk.
He removed the original marriage contract.
I stared.
“What are you doing?”
He opened it.
Turned to the clause about children.
And read aloud.
“Neither party shall expect or require children as part of this marriage.”
I smiled sadly.
Luca looked at me.
“I wrote that because I thought I had nothing to offer a family.”
My eyes filled.
He continued.
“I thought marriage was a transaction.”
He took my hand.
“Then you walked into my life.”
His voice softened.
“And everything changed.”
I squeezed his hand.
Luca removed a small velvet box from his pocket.
My breath caught.
He opened it.
Inside was a new wedding ring.
Simple.
Elegant.
Beautiful.
“Evelyn Varenna,” he whispered, “eleven weeks after we married, you told me something I thought was impossible.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“You gave me hope.”
He swallowed.
“Then you gave me love.”
A tear slipped down his cheek.
“And together, we created the family I thought I'd never have.”
He smiled.
“So I'm asking you something I should have asked before our wedding.”
I covered my mouth.
“Will you marry me again?”
My eyes filled.
“This time,” he continued, “not because of a contract.”
He stepped closer.
“Not because of money.”
His voice broke.
“But because I love you.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
Luca smiled.
“Yes?”
I laughed through my tears.
“Yes, you impossible man.”
He slipped the ring onto my finger.
Then kissed me.
And for the first time, our marriage felt completely free.
Not purchased.
Not negotiated.
Not controlled by fear.
Just chosen.
Later that evening, we returned home.
My mother was sitting in the living room with Sofia asleep against her shoulder.
She looked healthier than she had in years.
Her treatment had helped stabilize her condition, although she still needed regular medical care.
Luca approached quietly.
He looked at our daughter.
Then at my mother.
Then at me.
And smiled.
For twelve years, he'd believed his future had been stolen.
For eleven weeks, he'd believed our marriage was nothing more than an arrangement.
But now he had everything he'd never dared to imagine.
A wife who loved him.
A daughter who adored him.
A family built on truth.
And a life that belonged to him.
Luca Varenna spent twelve years believing he could never become a father.

But the greatest miracle wasn't simply that Evelyn became pregnant.
It was that a man raised to believe love was weakness finally learned that love was the only thing worth protecting.
