Chapter 4 - The Silver Locket in the Cloth Pocket

The brass bell above the bakery door chimed with violent force as Alexander Sterling strode inside, flanked by six armed tactical operators in dark wool overcoats.

At thirty-six, Alexander radiated sovereign, untouchable power. His tailored midnight-navy suit and dark cashmere overcoat framed a broad, formidable stature, but his slate-gray eyes were wild with raw, desperate agony.

The customers in the bakery flattened themselves against the display cases in sheer shock.

Victoria Vance’s breath caught in her throat. She stepped forward, trying to force a dazzling, high-society smile. “Alexander! What an incredible coincidence! I was just ordering pastries for our family gala—”

Alexander didn't even see her. He walked straight past her as if she were made of thin air.

His eyes locked onto the small, trembling figure kneeling on the floorboards beside the fallen pennies.

Clara looked up.

Her large, expressive hazel-brown eyes—the exact color, shape, and depth of Alexander’s late wife, Lady Vivienne—stared directly into his soul.

Alexander dropped to both knees on the cold marble floor, his tailored trousers brushing the scattered coins, completely heedless of his wealth, his prestige, or the twenty people watching in breathless silence.

His hands shook uncontrollably as he reached out, hovering inches from her face.

“Clara…?” Alexander whispered, his voice breaking into a ragged, breathless sob.

The little girl reached into her torn pocket and pulled out a small, tarnished silver heart-shaped locket tied to a piece of faded blue ribbon.

She opened the locket with her small thumb.

Inside was a microscopic portrait of Alexander and Vivienne on their wedding day, engraved with the words:

‘To our unborn angel — Forever loved by Mommy & Daddy.’

Alexander buried his face into the child’s small shoulder, wrapping his powerful arms around her frail, shivering body, sobbing with a depth of grief and boundless joy that shook his entire frame.

“You’re alive…” Alexander wept against her hair, kissing her damp forehead over and over again. “My baby… my angel… you’re alive!”
