Chapter 7 - Handcuffs in the Lobby

“That's impossible!” Ethan shouted, slamming his palms onto the marble table. “I built the Chicago expansion! I generated sixty million dollars in gross revenue over three years! You can't fire me!”

“You didn't generate revenue, Ethan,” CFO David Miller spoke up, projecting the forensic accounting slides onto the massive 4K wall monitors. “You operated a multi-million-dollar embezzlement carousel.”

The screens displayed the complete financial breakdown:

$4.5 million funneled to Vanguard Crest LLC (Liam Vance).

$3.2 million stolen from corporate escrow to buy Chloe’s Gold Coast penthouse.

$1.8 million in fabricated consulting invoices paid to Chloe Vance’s private LLC.

Beside the invoices, the kitchen surveillance video from this morning loaded onto the main screen.

The entire boardroom watched in high definition as Chloe deliberately threw herself onto the hardwood floor, spilling the breakfast plate while I stood three feet away with my arms folded, followed by Ethan rushing in and threatening to freeze my accounts.

Chloe let out a horrified squeak, burying her face in her hands.

“You set me up!” Chloe screamed at me, her fragile facade completely shattering into hysterical rage. “You planned this!”

“You set yourself up the moment you mistook my patience for ignorance, Chloe,” I replied without looking at her.

Special Agent Morales stepped forward, pulling two pairs of heavy steel handcuffs from her tactical vest.

“Ethan Vance and Chloe Vance,” Agent Morales announced. “You are under arrest pursuant to a federal warrant for Grand Embezzlement, Wire Fraud, Aggravated Identity Theft, and Conspiracy to Defraud Shareholders.”

Two federal agents moved in, forcing Ethan’s arms behind his back. The cold steel clicked tightly around his wrists.

“Mabel! Please!” Ethan wept, struggling against the agents as his knees buckled. “I made a mistake! It was just a distraction! I love you! We’ve been together for ten years! Don't let them take me!”

I looked down at the man who had told me twelve hours ago: 'If you pretend you don't know anything, you can keep being my wife.'

“I don't need to pretend anymore, Ethan,” I said quietly. “Because you are nothing to me.”
