Chapter 2 - The Kitchen Theatre

I took another step down the stairs.

Chloe walked toward me holding a hot breakfast plate. Before I could even make contact with her, she dramatically let herself drop to the hardwood floor, spilling the food.

Ethan rushed forward to pull her up. “Mabel! I told you not to hurt her!”

I stared at him in utter disbelief. “I didn't touch her.”

“Chloe is very delicate,” he snapped. “You can’t act like this!”

I looked him straight in the eyes. “I didn't push her, Ethan. Look at me and tell me you believe me.”

Ethan hesitated. It lasted only a second.

Then Chloe buried her face against his chest, sobbing, and he stopped looking at me altogether.

In that single second, I understood that my marriage hadn't just broken.

It had been dead for three years.

“Are you hurt, baby?” Ethan cooed, cradling Chloe’s shoulder while glaring at me as if I were venom. “Don't worry. I’m booking you a suite at the St. Regis right now. Nobody treats you like this.”

“Ethan, she hates me,” Chloe whimpered into his linen shirt, her mascara running in theatrical ribbons. “I only wanted to make things peaceful between us. I thought if she saw how much I care for you, she’d understand.”

“You don't need her understanding,” Ethan said coldly, lifting Chloe to her feet. He turned to me, his voice sharp as broken glass. “Mabel, you will apologize to Chloe right now, or I will file for an emergency separation and freeze every allowance account in this household.”

I looked at the shattered ceramic plate, the fried eggs smeared across the oak floorboards, and then up at the high-angle recessed spotlight in the ceiling.

Directly embedded inside the smoke detector above the kitchen island was a 4K wide-angle security camera with continuous cloud backup—installed two weeks ago when I first suspected his long-distance financial irregularities.

A faint, calm smile touched my lips.

“I won't apologize, Ethan,” I said softly. “Because by the time this day is over, you will be the one on your knees begging.”

Ethan scoffed, waving his hand dismissively. “You’ve lost your mind. Pack a bag and go stay at your mother's for the weekend. When you learn some respect, we'll talk.”

He wrapped his arm around Chloe’s waist and escorted her out to his Mercedes.

I stood alone in the quiet kitchen. I didn't cry a single tear.

I walked over to the kitchen island, picked up my phone, and dialed Marcus Kane—the senior managing partner at Kane & Sterling Corporate Law.

“Marcus,” I said, my voice diamond-hard. “Execute Protocol Alpha. The board meeting is at two o’clock. Bring the forensic audit.”
