Chapter 3 - The Forensic Dossier

By 10:30 AM, I was seated in the private conference room on the 48th floor of the Kane & Sterling headquarters in downtown.
Marcus Kane slid a leather-bound folder across the glass table.
“Mabel, what we uncovered in the Chicago subsidiary accounts is far worse than simple infidelity,” Marcus said, adjusting his spectacles. “Over the past thirty-six months, Ethan used his position as Regional Vice President to divert corporate capital into three shell companies registered in Delaware and the Cayman Islands.”
He opened the first tab.
“Vanguard Crest LLC—sole shareholder: Liam Vance, Chloe’s twenty-four-year-old brother. Ethan authorized a $4.5 million uncollateralized seed investment from Vance Global’s innovation fund into Liam's failed crypto brokerage.”
Marcus flipped to the second tab.
“Aura Properties Ltd.—sole beneficiary: Chloe Vance. Ethan used corporate development escrow funds to purchase a $3.2 million penthouse in Chicago’s Gold Coast, along with a $650,000 beachfront villa in Naples, Florida. He falsified the board minutes by forging your father’s signature on the acquisition waivers.”
I traced my finger over the forged signature. My father, William Sterling, had founded Vance Global forty years ago before bringing Ethan’s father in as a junior minority partner. When my father passed away four years ago, his sixty-two percent controlling voting stake transferred into the William Sterling Irrevocable Family Trust—with me as the sole surviving trustee.
Ethan had assumed that because I stayed out of the daily operations during his Chicago assignment, I was merely a passive housewife. He believed the company carried his family's surname on the letterhead, forgetting whose blood and billions built the empire.
“Does he have any personal liquidity left?” I asked.
“None,” Marcus answered with a grim chuckle. “Ethan leveraged his personal stock options to secure private loans for Chloe’s luxury habits. His personal bank accounts are overdrawn by nearly $400,000. If we pull the corporate guarantee, he is instantly, completely bankrupt.”
“And the criminal implications?”
“Grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, securities fraud, and federal tax evasion exceeding $12 million,” Marcus replied. “United States Attorney Sarah Morales has already reviewed the docket. A federal grand jury returned a sealed indictment at dawn.”

I closed the file with a quiet, satisfying click.
“Let’s go introduce Mr. Vance to his true standing.”
