Chapter 4 - A BRIDE WHO REFUSED TO BE BOUGHT

I went home at three in the morning.

Julian offered a car.

I refused.

He offered money for my time.

I refused that too.

Then he stood beside the elevator and said:

“Lena.”

I turned.

“Yes?”

“I'm sorry.”

I stared.

“For what?”

“For putting you in that position.”

I looked at him.

Then smiled faintly.

“You were desperate.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

I continued.

“But desperation doesn't give you the right to make someone else's life complicated.”

His expression softened.

“I know.”

I stepped into the elevator.

Then hesitated.

“Mr. Vale.”

He looked up.

“Yes?”

“If you find your niece, make sure someone is thinking about what she needs.”

He nodded slowly.

“I will.”

The doors began closing.

Then he said:

“Your mother.”

I froze.

“What?”

“You said she's sick.”

I swallowed.

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“I know a hospital foundation that may be able to help.”

I stared.

He continued.

“No marriage. No conditions.”

My eyes filled unexpectedly.

Then I whispered:

“Thank you.”

The elevator doors closed.

And for the first time that night, I wondered whether Julian Vale was a better man than his reputation suggested.
