The photographs appeared online three days later.
Daniel Whitmore.
Emily Carter.
Lily.
The piano.
The headlines were cruel.

Lily's classmates began whispering.
Strangers approached her outside school.

By Friday, she refused to leave the apartment.
Emily called Daniel.
“She won't go to school.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I'll handle the press.”
“Daniel, you can't control everything.”
He swallowed.
“I know.”
Then Emily whispered:
“She thinks everyone only cares because you're rich.”
Daniel felt sick.
He had spent his life building a name people recognized.
Now that name was hurting his daughter.
That evening, he released a brief statement asking the public to respect Lily's privacy.
He did not reveal personal details.
He did not call her an heiress.
He did not discuss Emily.
Then he canceled a television interview.
And went to Lily's apartment.
She opened the door.
“You're here.”
He nodded.
“I brought pizza.”
She looked at the box.
“Pepperoni?”
“Yes.”
She hesitated.
Then stepped aside.
For two hours, they ate pizza and watched a terrible science-fiction movie.
Daniel didn't mention the newspapers.
Lily didn't mention the gala.
But when he left, she hugged him.
