Chapter 10 - THE PERFORMANCE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The competition took place in a concert hall near Lake Michigan.
Lily wore a navy dress.
Her hair was tied back with the same pink ribbon she had worn at the gala.
Emily sat in the third row.
Daniel sat beside her.
He had arrived without photographers.
Without assistants.
Without security surrounding him.
Just a father holding a program.
When Lily stepped onto the stage, Daniel felt his heart pounding.
She sat at the piano.
Placed her hands on the keys.
Then began.
The melody was beautiful.
Not the song Daniel had written.
Something entirely her own.
It began with uncertainty.
Then grew stronger.
The cello entered.
The music rose.
Fell.
Then returned with a quiet confidence that made Emily begin crying.
Daniel stared at the stage.
He had missed so much.
But he was here now.
When the final note faded, the audience stood.
Lily looked stunned.
Then smiled.
Daniel applauded until his hands hurt.
Afterward, she found them backstage.
“Mom!”
Emily hugged her.
Then Lily turned toward Daniel.
“Did you like it?”
He swallowed.
“Lily, it was beautiful.”
She smiled.
Then whispered:
“I wrote the ending after you came back.”
Daniel felt tears fill his eyes.
“What?”
She nodded.
“I didn't know how the song should end before.”
May you like
He hugged her carefully.
And for the first time, Lily hugged him back without hesitation.
