Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO NEVER STOPPED LOVING HIM

Emily and Daniel began talking again.
Not about Lily.
About themselves.
About the years they had lost.
About the people they had become.
One evening, after Lily fell asleep, they sat at Emily's kitchen table.
The apartment smelled of cinnamon tea.
Daniel looked at her.
“Why didn't you come back?”
Emily stared into her cup.
“I thought you didn't want us.”
He shook his head.
“I looked for you.”
She nodded.
“I know that now.”
He swallowed.
“I never stopped loving you.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“Daniel.”
“It's true.”
She looked at him.
“You don't know me anymore.”
He nodded.
“Then let me learn.”
Her eyes filled.
“It's not that simple.”
“I know.”
She shook her head.
“Sixteen years is a long time.”
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.”
Then he whispered:
“But I don't want to lose another sixteen because I'm afraid to ask for a second chance.”
Emily began crying.
He didn't touch her.
He waited.
