Chapter 4 - THE DEBT THAT NEVER EXISTED

The following morning, Leo sent me a message.
Your father’s medical coverage will continue. It was never dependent on Nico.
I stared at the screen.
Then typed:
Thank you.
His reply came a minute later.
You don't have to thank me.
I looked at the message for a long time.
Then called him.
He answered immediately.
“Myra?”
“Why?”
Silence.
“Why what?”
“Why are you helping us?”
Leo exhaled.
“Because your father was injured during a conflict connected to my organization.”
I swallowed.
“And?”
“And I have a responsibility to make that right.”
I looked down.
“That's all?”
He was quiet for a moment.
Then answered:
“That's enough.”
My throat tightened.
I didn't know what to say.
Leo continued.
“Myra, listen carefully.”
I closed my eyes.
“You don't owe me your time.”
A tear slipped down my cheek.
“Your affection.”
Another tear.
“Or anything else.”
I covered my mouth.
He waited.
Then said softly:
May you like
“You are free.”
And those three words changed something inside me.
