Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO NEVER DIED

The breakthrough came from a hospital archive in southern Italy.
An attorney working with investigators found records for a woman admitted under an assumed name in 1999.
She had suffered severe injuries.
Her identity had been concealed.
But her medical history contained a detail that matched Isabella.
A surgical scar from an emergency procedure after childbirth.
The woman had survived.
She was later transferred to a rehabilitation facility.
Then disappeared from official records.
Alessandro called me.
“Sophia.”
His voice shook.
“We found something.”
I gripped the phone.
“What?”
He hesitated.
“I think your mother may still be alive.”
I couldn't speak.
For twenty-eight years, I had mourned a woman I never knew.
Now someone was telling me she might be living somewhere.
Breathing.
Walking.
Remembering me.
The search took six weeks.
Then investigators located a woman named Elisa Moretti living in a small coastal town near Salerno.
She taught violin to children.
She lived alone.
And she had never married.
Her photograph arrived on a Thursday morning.
I stared at the screen.
The woman had silver strands in her dark hair.
Fine lines around her eyes.
But the small scar above her left eyebrow was unmistakable.
I began crying.
Alessandro called again.
“She agreed to speak with us.”
I closed my eyes.
“Does she know who I am?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
My heart hammered.
“What did she say?”
May you like
Alessandro's voice broke.
“She asked whether you still like music.”
