Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO CHOSE HERSELF

I left Bellissimo three months later.
Not because Alessandro asked me to.
Because I had been accepted into a graduate program in translation and international communication.
Italian had always been my first language.
English had become my second.
And for years, I'd treated both as tools for survival.
Now I wanted to use them to build something meaningful.
I began working with nonprofit organizations that helped immigrant families navigate legal and medical systems.
I translated documents.
Interpreted appointments.
And helped people understand information that could change their lives.
My mother visited New York that spring.
We walked through Central Park.
Ate pizza.
And spent hours talking about ordinary things.
Sometimes, the years we'd lost felt unbearable.
But we learned not to measure our relationship only by what was missing.
We focused on what we could still build.
Alessandro and I began dating slowly.
Coffee.
Walks.
Dinner in small restaurants where nobody knew his name.
He never asked me to abandon my career.
Never tried to make decisions for me.
Never treated my independence as a threat.
One evening, we stood beside the East River.
The city lights shimmered across the water.
“Sophia,” he said.
I looked up.
“Yes?”
“I think I'm falling in love with you.”
My heart raced.
I smiled.
“I think I am too.”
He reached for my hand.
May you like
And this time, there was no fear.
Only choice.
