Chapter 8 - THE FIRST PROMISE HE COULDN'T BREAK

The first promise Dante made me was simple.
“No lies.”
I stared.
“That's ambitious.”
He smiled faintly.
“I know.”
We were standing on the balcony of his Manhattan penthouse.
Snow drifted beyond the windows.
The city glittered below.
I looked at him.
“Can you actually do that?”
He hesitated.
Then answered:
“I can try.”
I folded my arms.
“Dante.”
He sighed.
“Clara.”
I smiled faintly.
“Truth.”
His expression softened.
Then he nodded.
“Yes.”
I took a breath.
“Have you ever hurt someone?”
Silence.
Dante looked away.
For a long moment, he didn't speak.
Then he answered:
“Yes.”
My heart tightened.
“Do you regret it?”
He looked back.
“Some of it.”
I swallowed.
“And the rest?”
His expression darkened.
“The rest is why I don't want you involved in my world.”
I stared.
Then whispered:
“Maybe you should leave that world.”
Dante looked toward the skyline.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
May you like
Then he answered:
“Maybe.”
