Chapter 6 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE BLUE GLASS

The glass fragments arrived at the forensic laboratory in three sealed evidence bags.

Chloe recognized them immediately.

The wings.

The narrow curved neck.

The tiny bubbles Lily deliberately trapped near the edges.

She pressed her fingers against the viewing glass.

"That's hers."

Detective Sullivan stood beside her.

"You're certain?"

"Absolutely."

A forensic materials specialist named Dr. Helen Park examined the fragments under magnification.

Helen had spent twenty years identifying rare glass techniques and tracing artistic provenance.

She wasn't impressed by Matteo's reputation.

In fact, she'd refused to allow him into the laboratory without clearance.

Chloe liked her immediately.

"Your sister was unusually skilled," Helen said.

"She was."

"This piece uses layered construction. Two types of glass fused together."

Chloe leaned forward.

"Lily experimented with that technique."

Helen adjusted the microscope.

"Look here."

A magnified image appeared on the monitor.

Inside one wing was a thin metallic strip.

Almost invisible.

Chloe stared.

"What is that?"

"Not sure yet."

Helen enlarged the image.

The strip contained tiny engraved markings.

They weren't decorative.

They resembled letters.

Numbers.

And miniature lines arranged in repeating patterns.

Chloe's heartbeat accelerated.

"Can you read them?"

"Not from this fragment alone."

"Why?"

"Part of the sequence continues into the other wing."

Chloe looked at the fragments.

Tommy had smashed the bird against the wall.

Several pieces were missing.

Helen examined the remaining glass.

Then frowned.

"There's something unusual about how this was made."

"What?"

"The engraved material appears to have been inserted during the glass-forming process."

Chloe's breath caught.

"Could Lily have hidden information inside it?"

Helen nodded slowly.

"That's a reasonable possibility."

Detective Sullivan leaned forward.

"What sort of information?"

"We need further examination before drawing conclusions."

Chloe sat back.

For seven years, Lily's disappearance had seemed impossible to explain.

Now the little bird she'd treasured might hold something her sister wanted preserved.

But they needed the missing fragments.

"Tommy might still have them," Chloe whispered.

Sullivan looked at her.

"We're examining that possibility."

Chloe shook her head.

"He used to keep broken things."

"What do you mean?"

"If he broke a picture frame or a piece of jewelry, he sometimes kept a fragment."

The detective made a note.

"Why?"

Chloe swallowed.

"To remind me what happened when I upset him."

Silence followed.

Helen looked away from the microscope.

Sullivan's expression softened.

"I'm sorry you experienced that."

Chloe nodded.

Then straightened.

"But if he kept part of the bird, it might help us."

"Possibly."

Chloe thought for a moment.

Then remembered a small box in Tommy's study.

A black wooden cigar box.

He kept unusual objects inside.

An old watch.

A broken necklace.

A silver earring Chloe lost during an argument.

And perhaps pieces of Lily's bird.

She described it to the detective.

Sullivan made another note.

"We'll pursue appropriate investigative steps."

That afternoon, Matteo learned the preliminary findings.

He was standing in his office when Sullivan called.

The detective told him only what she was authorized to disclose.

A concealed metallic element had been identified.

Further analysis was underway.

Matteo listened carefully.

Then asked, "Could it contain records?"

"We don't know yet."

He nodded.

After the call, Luca entered.

"Anything?"

"Possibly."

Matteo looked toward a photograph of Enzo.

His younger brother stood beside a half-restored stained-glass window.

He was smiling.

Matteo remembered that window.

Enzo had been fascinated by Lily's work.

He'd once told Matteo that glass could preserve secrets longer than paper.

At the time, Matteo laughed.

Now he wondered whether Enzo had understood exactly what Lily was making.

He retrieved a file from his desk.

The original investigation included photographs of Enzo's belongings.

Wallet.

Keys.

Phone.

A notebook.

And one small silver object.

A ring-shaped magnifier.

Matteo looked closer.

There was an inscription along the handle.

L.W. – LIGHT REVEALS WHAT SHADOW HIDES.

His stomach tightened.

Lily Whitaker.

He called Detective Sullivan.

"I think my brother was helping Lily."

The detective listened.

"What makes you say that?"

"He had a magnifier inscribed with her initials."

"That's not proof of anything criminal."

"I know."

Matteo paused.

"But what if they were examining something in the glass?"

Sullivan was silent for a moment.

Then said, "Send us the photograph."

He did.

That evening, Chloe received a call from the detective.

The engraved strip might require a particular optical viewing method.

And Lily's old magnifier could be relevant.

Chloe looked toward her workshop.

Then remembered the sentence Lily wrote in one of her childhood notebooks.

Sometimes you have to look through the blue to see what's really there.

A memory returned.

Lily used to place colored glass over written messages.

Certain markings became visible only through the correct filter.

Chloe's breath caught.

She called Helen.

"I think I know how my sister intended someone to read the bird."
