Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT TOMMY CAME FOR HER

The attack happened on a Thursday evening.

Chloe was leaving Rosa's glass studio after teaching her first beginner restoration class.

Six students had attended.

One was a retired firefighter.

Another was a shy sixteen-year-old who barely spoke above a whisper.

Chloe understood her immediately.

She'd spent the afternoon teaching them to cut glass safely, prepare designs, and fit small pieces into wooden frames.

When the class ended, every student had created something.

A flower.

A sun.

A little blue bird.

Chloe walked outside feeling happier than she had in years.

Then she saw Tommy.

He stood across the street beside a parked gray car.

Her entire body froze.

For a moment, she was back in the apartment.

Back on the kitchen floor.

Back in the alley.

Her lungs tightened.

Tommy smiled.

"Hey, baby."

Chloe took a step backward.

He crossed the street.

"Don't be like that."

She reached for her phone.

"Stay away."

His smile hardened.

"You've been making trouble."

Chloe swallowed.

"I don't want to speak to you."

"Your new boyfriend tell you to say that?"

She looked around.

People were walking nearby.

A delivery driver unloaded boxes.

A woman waited at the bus stop.

Chloe reminded herself that she wasn't trapped.

"Leave me alone, Tommy."

He stepped closer.

"You think Rinaldi's going to protect you?"

Chloe raised her voice.

"Stop following me."

Several people looked over.

Tommy's face changed.

He hated audiences he couldn't control.

"Keep your voice down."

"No."

He reached for her wrist.

She pulled back.

"Don't touch me!"

The delivery driver stopped.

"Everything okay?"

Tommy turned.

"Family business."

Chloe spoke before fear could silence her.

"No. He's been threatening me. Please call the police."

The driver immediately reached for his phone.

Tommy stared at Chloe.

For one moment, she thought he might strike her.

Then he stepped backward.

"You'll regret this."

He hurried toward the gray car.

But before he could enter, a police cruiser turned onto the street.

Officers had been alerted to a potential violation of protective conditions.

Tommy tried to walk away.

The officers stopped him.

Chloe stood shaking beneath the studio awning.

Rosa emerged and wrapped a warm coat around her shoulders.

"It's all right, honey."

Chloe began crying.

Not because Tommy had returned.

Because she'd finally shouted for help.

And someone had answered.

Later, at the police station, Chloe gave a statement.

She described the threats.

The physical intimidation.

The stalking.

The questions about Lily's belongings.

Tommy's conduct was documented as part of the ongoing investigation.

A separate inquiry examined whether he or his relatives had participated in Lily's unlawful confinement years earlier.

The authorities did not immediately resolve every allegation.

But for the first time, Tommy couldn't simply dismiss Chloe's fear as a private disagreement.

There were witnesses.

Records.

Photographs.

Messages.

And a woman who no longer intended to remain silent.

Matteo arrived after Chloe's attorney informed him she had asked to see him.

He found her sitting in a quiet interview room.

Her hands were trembling.

He stopped several feet away.

"Are you hurt?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Did he touch you?"

"He tried."

Matteo's jaw tightened.

Chloe noticed.

"Don't."

He looked at her.

"What?"

"Don't go after him."

Matteo was silent.

She continued.

"I know what people say about you. I know what you've done to men who crossed you."

His expression darkened.

"Chloe—"

"I don't want anyone hurt because of me."

He looked away.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he nodded.

"All right."

She stared.

"All right?"

"I won't retaliate."

"Promise?"

He looked directly into her eyes.

"I promise I will not use violence to settle what happened to you."

Chloe exhaled shakily.

Then she began crying again.

Matteo crouched beside her chair.

"May I?"

She nodded.

He took her hand.

Gently.

Without tightening his grip.

Without pulling her closer.

She looked at his hand.

Strong.

Scarred.

Capable of frightening people.

Yet careful with hers.

"Why are you helping me?" she whispered.

Matteo thought for a moment.

"At first, because you were frightened and needed somewhere safe."

"And now?"

He looked at her.

"Now because I care about you."

Her heart stumbled.

She looked away.

"Matteo, I'm not ready for—"

"I know."

He smiled faintly.

"I'm not asking you for anything."

She swallowed.

"Then what do you want?"

"For you to be safe. For Lily's case to be investigated properly. And for you to have the life you were trying to reach when you climbed into my car."

Tears slipped down her cheeks.

For the first time, Chloe understood that someone could care for her without demanding ownership of her future.

And that realization frightened her.

May you like

Because it made hope possible.
