Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN AT THE END OF THE PLATFORM

The old train station had become a community arts center.

Its brick walls were covered in climbing ivy.

Its clock had stopped at 6:12.

And the enormous yellow windows still caught the morning sunlight.

Chloe stood outside with her heart pounding.

Detective Sullivan had already contacted the center's director.

A woman named Eleanor Finch.

Eleanor was sixty-three, with short white hair and paint on her hands.

When she saw Chloe's photograph of Lily, she went completely still.

"Where did you get that?"

Chloe's breath caught.

"She's my sister."

Eleanor looked toward the hallway.

Then back at Chloe.

"Come inside."

They entered a small office filled with art supplies and framed photographs.

Eleanor closed the door.

For several seconds, she simply stared at Lily's face.

Then she whispered, "I promised I wouldn't tell anyone."

Chloe's knees nearly buckled.

"She's alive?"

Eleanor's eyes filled.

"I believe so."

Chloe pressed a hand against the desk.

"Where?"

"I haven't seen her in almost a year."

The hope was painful.

But real.

Eleanor explained that a woman named Laura Wells had arrived at the arts center six years earlier.

She was quiet.

Skilled with glass.

And terrified of being photographed.

She asked whether the center needed a restoration instructor.

Eleanor hired her.

For four years, Laura taught classes, repaired old windows, and created small glass birds for charity auctions.

She rarely spoke about her past.

Then, eighteen months ago, she left suddenly.

She said someone had recognized her.

Before leaving, she placed a sealed package with Eleanor.

The package was labeled:

FOR CHLOE WHITAKER — ONLY IF SHE COMES HERSELF.

Chloe began crying.

Eleanor retrieved a small wooden box from a locked cabinet.

The investigators documented its transfer.

Inside was a photograph.

Lily stood beside the train station, smiling faintly.

She looked older.

Thinner.

But alive.

In her hands was a blue glass bird.

Chloe touched the photograph.

"Oh, Lily."

Beneath it lay a letter.

My sweet Little Bird,

If you're reading this, you found the trail.

I wanted to come home so many times.

But the men who killed Enzo knew your name. They knew where you lived. They threatened you and Mom.

I thought staying away would keep you safe.

I was wrong about many things. Maybe I was wrong about that too.

I'm sorry I missed your birthdays. I'm sorry I wasn't there when Mom died.

I never stopped loving you.

Chloe could barely see through her tears.

She continued.

I've kept copies of everything I found. I'm working with people who can help bring the truth into the open, but I still don't know whom to trust.

If you are safe, please tell them about the blue birds.

And remember what Grandma said: no darkness lasts forever.

I love you.

Lily.

Chloe pressed the letter against her chest.

For seven years, she had wondered whether Lily left willingly.

Now she knew her sister had been living in fear.

Fear for Chloe.

Fear for their mother.

Fear that returning would make things worse.

Matteo stood quietly near the window.

He didn't interrupt.

Didn't touch her.

He let her cry.

When Chloe finally looked up, he asked, "Are you okay?"

She shook her head.

"No."

He nodded.

"That's fair."

She gave a broken laugh.

Then looked at the photograph.

"My sister was alive."

Matteo's expression softened.

"Yes."

"She might still be."

"Yes."

Chloe wiped her face.

"Then we keep looking."

Before anyone could answer, Detective Sullivan's phone rang.

She stepped outside.

When she returned, her expression had changed.

"Chloe, we have news."

Chloe stood.

"What?"

"A woman contacted the investigation through an attorney."

Her heartbeat accelerated.

"Who?"

"She's using the name Laura Wells."

Chloe stopped breathing.

Sullivan continued.

"She says she is Lily Whitaker."

Chloe's knees weakened.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then she whispered, "Where is she?"

The detective smiled gently.

May you like

"She's asking the same question about you."
