Chapter 13 - THE SISTER WHO CAME HOME

The reunion took place in a quiet conference room at a government building.
No photographers.
No reporters.
No cameras waiting outside.
Just a room with pale walls, a round table, and a window overlooking a courtyard.
Chloe had imagined this moment for seven years.
She thought she'd run toward Lily.
Scream.
Cry.
Demand answers.
But when the door opened, she couldn't move.
A woman stepped inside.
Dark hair.
Brown eyes.
A small crescent-shaped scar beneath her chin.
She looked older than the girl in Chloe's memories.
There were faint lines around her eyes.
A scar near her wrist.
And a careful way of moving, as though she'd spent years checking every doorway before entering.
But it was Lily.
Her Lily.
"Chloe?"
The voice was exactly the same.
Chloe covered her mouth.
Then whispered, "Lily?"
Her sister began crying.
They moved toward each other at the same time.
The embrace was desperate.
Awkward.
Overwhelming.
Chloe held her as though the world might take her away again.
Lily sobbed against her shoulder.
"I'm sorry."
Chloe shook her head.
"Don't."
"I'm so sorry."
"You're here."
Lily held her tighter.
"I'm here."
For several minutes, neither could speak.
Then Chloe pulled back and touched her sister's face.
"You're real."
Lily laughed through tears.
"So are you."
Chloe stared at her.
"I thought you were dead."
"I know."
"Mom died believing she'd never see you again."
Lily's face crumpled.
"I know."
The grief that passed between them was almost unbearable.
Their mother.
The missed years.
The birthdays.
The holidays.
Every ordinary moment stolen by fear.
Chloe wanted to ask a thousand questions.
Instead, she sat beside Lily and held her hand.
Eventually, Lily explained.
After escaping from Russell Keegan's men, she'd hidden at the lighthouse and later moved to the train station.
She continued gathering evidence related to Vittorio's art collection.
She contacted attorneys and investigators through intermediaries.
But several people she approached appeared to have connections to the criminal network.
She became convinced that revealing her location would endanger Chloe.
Her fear wasn't entirely unfounded.
Russell had threatened both sisters repeatedly.
Years later, when Lily discovered Tommy was living with Chloe, she tried to warn her anonymously.
But the warning never reached Chloe.
Tommy had intercepted it.
Chloe closed her eyes.
"He knew."
Lily nodded.
"He knew who you were when he met you."
Chloe felt sick.
"He pretended to love me."
Lily squeezed her hand.
"I'm sorry."
Chloe looked at her.
"Did you know he hurt me?"
Lily's eyes filled.
"Not until recently."
She began crying.
"I thought staying hidden was protecting you. But I didn't know what was happening inside your home."
Chloe held her sister's hand.
For a long moment, they said nothing.
Then Chloe whispered, "We both made choices because we were afraid."
Lily nodded.
"And the people who threatened us used that fear."
Chloe looked up.
"But we're here now."
Lily smiled through tears.
"Yes."
Later, Detective Sullivan explained that Lily had already provided information to the investigation through counsel.
The preserved glass records, her testimony, and newly recovered financial documents implicated Vittorio and Russell in a network of stolen and falsely attributed artworks.
Investigators were also examining Enzo's death.
Lily described the night at the gallery.
Enzo had tried to stop Russell from destroying records.
A struggle followed.
Enzo was struck and fell down a staircase.
Lily didn't see him afterward.
She believed he died.
Matteo listened to her account in another room, with investigators and counsel present.
His face was pale.
For seven years, he'd imagined a hundred versions of his brother's last moments.
Now the truth was finally becoming clearer.
He asked one question.
"Did Enzo know what he was risking?"
Lily looked at him.
"Yes."
Matteo closed his eyes.
She continued.
"He said he didn't want his family's name used to hurt people."
Tears filled Matteo's eyes.
For the first time, he understood that Enzo hadn't died because he was foolish.
He'd died trying to do what he believed was right.
That evening, Chloe and Lily sat together beside a window overlooking the city.
The sun was setting.
Lily rested her head against Chloe's shoulder.
"Do you hate me?" she whispered.
Chloe looked at her.
"For leaving?"
Lily nodded.
Chloe considered the question.
"I hate what happened to us."
Tears filled Lily's eyes.
"But I don't hate you."
Lily began crying.
Chloe held her.
Then smiled faintly.
"Although you owe me seven birthday presents."
Lily laughed through tears.
"Seven?"
"At least."
"I'll need a second job."
"Probably."
They laughed.
And for the first time in years, the laughter didn't feel haunted.
May you like
It felt like the beginning of a future.
