Chapter 5 - THE MAFIA BOSS WHO COULDN'T SAVE HIS SISTER

The first time Lorenzo Marchesi saw his sister after seven years, she was standing behind a reinforced glass window.

He didn't recognize her immediately.

She was thinner.

Her hair was shorter.

And the bright, reckless confidence he remembered had been replaced by a guarded expression.

But her eyes were the same.

Green.

Exactly like their mother's.

“Sofia.”

His voice broke.

The woman behind the glass stared at him.

Then she shook her head.

“No.”

Lorenzo stepped closer.

“It's me.”

She backed away.

“No.”

Carter, standing beside him, raised a hand.

“Give her space.”

Lorenzo stopped.

Sofia pressed herself against the far wall.

“You're not supposed to be here.”

Lorenzo swallowed.

“Who told you that?”

She looked toward the door.

“Gabriel.”

The room went silent.

The search of the former Harbor House property had uncovered a hidden residential facility operating without proper licensing.

Several vulnerable adults had been living there under restrictive conditions.

Some had been told their families abandoned them.

Others had been threatened with arrest if they tried to leave.

Sofia was among them.

Medical personnel were assessing everyone before arranging safe accommodations.

Lorenzo stood outside the room while Carter spoke with his sister.

He had imagined their reunion thousands of times.

In every version, Sofia ran into his arms.

She cried.

He apologized.

They went home.

Reality was crueler.

Sofia was afraid of him.

And he didn't know why.

Chloe approached slowly.

“Are you okay?”

Lorenzo laughed without humor.

“No.”

She stood beside him.

“You found her.”

“And she thinks I'm the enemy.”

Chloe looked through the window.

“She may have been told that for years.”

Lorenzo closed his eyes.

“I should have found her sooner.”

“You didn't know where she was.”

“I should have known.”

Chloe turned toward him.

“Lorenzo, listen to me.”

He looked down.

“People who manipulate someone for years can make them believe almost anything.”

Her voice trembled.

“I know.”

Lorenzo studied her face.

For the first time, he understood that Chloe wasn't speaking only about Sofia.

She was speaking about herself.

He reached toward her hand, then stopped.

“May I?”

Chloe nodded.

He gently took her fingers.

“Thank you.”

She smiled faintly.

“For what?”

“For reminding me that finding someone isn't the same as healing them.”

Inside the room, Sofia began crying.

Carter sat beside her.

Lorenzo watched helplessly.

He could command men.

Move money.

Influence powerful people.

But he couldn't make his sister trust him.

That afternoon, Carter revealed what investigators had learned.

Seven years earlier, Sofia had discovered financial irregularities connected to Marchesi Shipping.

She had confronted Gabriel.

Within days, she disappeared.

Gabriel told Lorenzo she had run away after a family argument.

Police later found her abandoned car near Lake Michigan.

The investigation went nowhere.

But Sofia had not run away.

She had been taken to Harbor House under a false identity.

Aaron Miller helped falsify the records.

And Gabriel paid for her confinement.

Lorenzo listened without speaking.

When Carter finished, he asked one question.

“Why didn't they kill her?”

Carter looked at the file.

“We believe she knew something they needed.”

“What?”

“Access credentials to an old financial archive.”

Lorenzo frowned.

“My father's archive?”

Carter nodded.

“Possibly.”

Lorenzo turned toward Matteo.

“Gabriel's been trying to get into that system for years.”

Matteo looked grim.

“He told us it was corrupted.”

Lorenzo stared at the floor.

His brother had hidden Sofia.

Used her.

Lied to him.

And perhaps planned to murder him once he obtained the remaining information.

For the first time in his adult life, Lorenzo wanted to destroy someone more than he wanted to understand them.

He walked outside into the cold Wisconsin air.

Matteo followed.

“Boss.”

Lorenzo stared toward the lake.

“Tell me we can end this.”

“We can.”

“Without another innocent person getting hurt?”

Matteo hesitated.

“We'll do everything we can.”

Lorenzo nodded slowly.

Then he reached for his phone.

Chloe's name appeared on the screen.

A message.

Your sister asked to see me.

He turned.

Through the facility window, he saw Chloe entering Sofia's room.

Sofia looked at her.

Then, for the first time since the rescue, she smiled.

May you like

Lorenzo watched in disbelief.

And he realized the woman who had stumbled into his nightclub seeking refuge might be the only person capable of reaching the sister he thought he'd lost forever.
