Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS CHOSEN

Aaron Miller had met Chloe at a charity fundraiser.

She remembered the evening perfectly.

A spring night in 2022.

She had worn a pale blue dress.

Aaron approached while she was helping volunteers arrange donation boxes.

He complimented her smile.

Asked about her work.

Offered to walk her to her car.

He seemed thoughtful.

Respectful.

Safe.

For months, Chloe had believed their meeting was fate.

Now she sat across from Special Agent Carter, staring at documents that proved otherwise.

Aaron had been assigned to monitor her.

Her mother's name appeared repeatedly in North Star records.

Investigators believed Margaret Bennett had copied financial evidence before her death.

Gabriel feared she might have passed it to Chloe.

Aaron was instructed to gain Chloe's trust and determine whether she possessed anything valuable.

Instead of simply investigating her, he began controlling her life.

He isolated her from friends.

Monitored her communications.

And eventually used violence to maintain his control.

Chloe stared at the photograph taken at the fundraiser.

Aaron was smiling beside her.

She remembered thinking she had finally met someone kind.

“I was never his girlfriend,” she whispered.

Carter leaned forward.

“You were in a relationship with him. His deception doesn't erase what you experienced.”

Chloe shook her head.

“He was using me.”

“Yes.”

“All of it?”

Carter hesitated.

“We can't know everything he felt. But we know his initial approach was deliberate.”

Chloe covered her face.

For a moment, she wanted to disappear.

Every happy memory felt contaminated.

Every promise sounded false.

She thought about the first time Aaron brought her flowers.

The first time he said he loved her.

The first time he apologized after hurting her.

Had any of it been real?

Carter waited.

Then she said, “Chloe, what Aaron did reflects his choices, not your worth.”

Chloe looked up.

“I know.”

But knowing and feeling were different things.

That evening, she returned to her apartment.

Lorenzo called twice.

She didn't answer.

Sarah sent a message.

I'm okay. I love you. You don't have to respond.

Chloe sat on the floor beside her couch.

She stared at the wall.

And she cried.

Not because she missed Aaron.

But because she missed the woman she had been before she met him.

The woman who laughed easily.

Who trusted her instincts.

Who didn't apologize for taking up space.

At midnight, someone knocked.

Chloe froze.

Then she heard Lorenzo's voice.

“It's me.”

She stood slowly.

“Lorenzo?”

“I know you wanted space. I brought dinner. I'll leave it outside.”

She looked through the peephole.

He stood in the hallway holding a paper bag.

No guards.

No expensive suit.

Just Lorenzo.

She opened the door.

He looked at her face.

“Bad day?”

She laughed weakly.

“The worst.”

He held up the bag.

“Pasta?”

She stepped aside.

“Come in.”

They ate at her small kitchen table.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then Chloe told him what she'd learned.

Lorenzo listened.

When she finished, she stared at her plate.

“I feel stupid.”

He shook his head.

“You were deceived.”

“I should have seen it.”

“Why?”

“Because there were signs.”

Lorenzo leaned forward.

“Chloe, people who manipulate others work hard to make those signs difficult to understand.”

She looked at him.

“I keep wondering whether I can trust myself.”

“You can rebuild that trust.”

“How?”

“One decision at a time.”

She considered his words.

Then she asked something that frightened her.

“Do you think I'm too damaged for a relationship?”

Lorenzo's expression changed.

“No.”

“But I get scared.”

“I know.”

“I don't always answer my phone.”

“That's your choice.”

“Sometimes I need to be alone.”

“Then I'll respect that.”

She stared at him.

“And what if I never become the woman I was before Aaron?”

Lorenzo reached across the table.

“Then I'll get to know the woman you become.”

Chloe began crying.

He didn't move until she reached for his hand.

Then he held it.

Later, as they sat together on the couch, Lorenzo told her about a decision he had made.

“I've contacted an independent legal team to review every part of Marchesi Shipping.”

Chloe looked up.

“Why?”

“Because Gabriel used our company to hide criminal activity. I need to know what else happened under my name.”

“That could destroy your business.”

“Maybe.”

“And if investigators find things you did?”

Lorenzo met her eyes.

“Then I'll answer for them.”

Chloe studied him.

She had spent years with a man who believed accountability was something other people deserved.

Lorenzo was different.

Not perfect.

Not innocent.

But willing to face the truth.

She leaned against his shoulder.

“I think that's the first time I've heard a powerful man say he might deserve consequences.”

Lorenzo smiled sadly.

“It's overdue.”

The following morning, Aaron Miller was arrested.

Federal agents charged him in connection with corruption, unlawful confinement, and conspiracy offenses.

Additional charges related to Chloe's abuse were being pursued through the appropriate state authorities.

News of the arrest spread across Chicago.

Reporters gathered outside police headquarters.

Former colleagues expressed shock.

Others admitted they had heard rumors for years.

Chloe watched the coverage from her apartment.

Then her phone rang.

An unknown number.

She hesitated before answering.

A woman's voice spoke.

“Chloe Bennett?”

“Yes?”

“My name is Rebecca Miller.”

Chloe went still.

Aaron's older sister.

They had met only twice.

Rebecca's voice trembled.

“I know you have no reason to trust me.”

Chloe said nothing.

“But there's something you need to know about Aaron.”

Chloe gripped the phone.

“What?”

Rebecca began crying.

“He didn't just hurt you.”

May you like

A pause.

“He did something to your mother.”
