Chapter 12 - THE NIGHT LORENZO LOST EVERYTHING

The collapse of Marchesi Shipping began on a Tuesday morning.
By noon, federal agents had searched three corporate offices.
By three, two banks had suspended lending agreements.
By five, the company's board demanded Lorenzo step down.
Financial reporters gathered outside headquarters.
Television anchors described the Marchesi family as a dynasty built on corruption.
Some accusations were supported by evidence.
Others were speculation.
But the damage was immediate.
Lorenzo sat in his office surrounded by lawyers.
Matteo stood beside the door.
“The board wants an answer,” one attorney said.
Lorenzo looked at the resignation agreement.
“If I step down, who takes control?”
“An independent interim management team.”
“And the employees?”
“We'll try to protect their positions.”
Lorenzo leaned back.
Thousands of people depended on the company.
Dockworkers.
Drivers.
Accountants.
Warehouse staff.
Most had nothing to do with Gabriel's crimes.
He had inherited an organization built partly through violence and intimidation.
For years, he told himself he could reform it from within.
Now he wondered whether he had waited too long.
“What happens if I refuse?” he asked.
The attorney hesitated.
“More uncertainty. More pressure. Possibly additional losses.”
Lorenzo looked toward the window.
Chicago stretched beneath a gray winter sky.
He thought about his father.
The lessons he had learned.
Power was survival.
Loyalty was everything.
Never show weakness.
Never surrender.
Then he thought about Sofia.
Seven years stolen.
About Margaret Bennett.
A woman who died trying to tell the truth.
About Chloe.
A woman who escaped an abusive detective with nothing but the clothes she wore.
And he realized something.
He had spent his life protecting an empire.
But an empire that required innocent people to suffer was not worth protecting.
He picked up the pen.
And signed.
By evening, the news was everywhere.
LORENZO MARCHESI RESIGNS AS COMPANY FACES FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.
Chloe watched the announcement from her apartment.
Then she called him.
He answered immediately.
“Hey.”
“Are you okay?”
He laughed quietly.
“That's a complicated question.”
“Where are you?”
“At the office.”
“Have you eaten?”
“No.”
“Then come over.”
“Chloe—”
“I'm making dinner.”
He hesitated.
“I don't want to drag you into this.”
She looked at the television.
“You're not dragging me anywhere.”
A pause.
“I'm choosing to be here.”
Forty minutes later, Lorenzo arrived.
He looked exhausted.
His tie was loose.
His eyes were shadowed.
Chloe opened the door.
For a moment, they simply stared at each other.
Then she stepped forward and hugged him.
Lorenzo held her tightly.
He didn't speak.
Neither did she.
They stayed that way until his breathing steadied.
Later, over bowls of homemade soup, Lorenzo told her what had happened.
“I resigned.”
“I saw.”
“I may lose most of what I own.”
Chloe nodded.
“I know.”
He studied her.
“You're not worried?”
“Of course I'm worried.”
“Then why are you smiling?”
She reached across the table.
“Because you're still here.”
Lorenzo looked at her.
She continued.
“You're still the man who listened when I said I was afraid. The man who helped find his sister. The man who chose to tell the truth.”
He lowered his eyes.
“I've done things I'm ashamed of.”
“I know.”
“Some of them may follow me for the rest of my life.”
“Then face them.”
He looked up.
Chloe's voice softened.
“But don't confuse losing money with losing your worth.”
Lorenzo stared at her.
Then he laughed.
A tired, disbelieving laugh.
“My father would have hated you.”
Chloe smiled.
“Probably.”
“He believed money was the only thing that mattered.”
“Then he missed a lot.”
Lorenzo reached for her hand.
“Yes,” he whispered. “He did.”
They sat together until midnight.
Then Lorenzo's phone rang.
Special Agent Carter.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What?”
Chloe straightened.
Carter spoke rapidly.
Lorenzo stood.
“Are you certain?”
A pause.
“Where?”
He looked at Chloe.
Then he said, “We're coming.”
He ended the call.
Chloe felt her stomach tighten.
“What happened?”
Lorenzo swallowed.
“Gabriel agreed to cooperate.”
She stared.
“With the investigation?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Lorenzo's expression darkened.
“Because he says Aaron Miller is planning to kill the last person who can identify the man responsible for your mother's death.”
Chloe went cold.
“Who?”
May you like
Lorenzo looked directly at her.
“Sarah.”
