Chapter 2 - THE DETECTIVE WHO OWNED HER FEAR

The first thing Chloe noticed when she woke was that nobody had turned off the lights.

Aaron always turned off the lights.

He liked darkness when he was angry.

He said it helped people understand how little control they had.

At Chicago Mercy Hospital, however, a soft lamp glowed beside her bed, and the hallway beyond the door remained bright.

Chloe stared at the ceiling for several seconds before remembering where she was.

The Velvet Lounge.

Sarah.

The ambulance.

Lorenzo Marchesi.

Then she remembered Aaron standing outside the club.

Her heartbeat accelerated.

She tried to sit up.

Pain stabbed beneath her left ribs.

“Easy.”

A woman in blue scrubs stepped into view.

She had dark curls tied into a bun and a silver identification badge reading Dr. Isabella Moretti.

“You have two cracked ribs, significant bruising, dehydration, and a mild concussion,” the doctor explained. “We also found older injuries in different stages of healing.”

Chloe looked away.

Dr. Moretti pulled a chair closer.

“I'm going to ask you something. You don't have to answer immediately.”

Chloe nodded.

“Are you safe at home?”

The question was so simple that Chloe almost laughed.

Home.

The apartment with the marble countertops Aaron insisted on keeping spotless.

The bedroom where she slept with one ear open.

The kitchen where she learned to recognize his footsteps.

“No,” she whispered.

Dr. Moretti nodded.

“Thank you for telling me.”

She explained that Chloe could speak with a hospital advocate, document her injuries, and discuss safe housing and legal options.

Chloe listened carefully.

Then she asked the question that had followed her everywhere.

“What if he's a police detective?”

The doctor's expression didn't change.

“Then we take additional precautions.”

Chloe felt tears gathering.

For two years, Aaron had insisted his badge made him untouchable.

She had almost believed him.

A quiet knock interrupted them.

Sarah entered carrying a paper cup of tea.

Behind her stood Lorenzo Marchesi.

Chloe stiffened.

Lorenzo noticed immediately.

“I can leave.”

Sarah approached the bed.

“He only wanted to make sure you were okay.”

Chloe looked at him.

In the hospital lighting, Lorenzo seemed less like the dangerous man described in newspaper rumors and more like someone who hadn't slept.

His dark hair was slightly disheveled.

There was a small cut across one knuckle.

He stood near the door rather than approaching.

“Your detective has been calling my club,” he said.

Chloe's stomach tightened.

“What did he say?”

“That you're unstable. That you invent stories. That you need him to make decisions for you.”

Her hands began shaking.

Lorenzo continued.

“I haven't believed him.”

Chloe stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because I saw how frightened you were when you heard his voice.”

She looked down.

“He can make people believe anything.”

“Not everyone.”

Sarah placed the tea beside her.

“Chloe, I need to tell you something.”

Chloe looked up.

“I went to your apartment.”

Her heart stopped.

“What?”

“I didn't go inside. Aaron was there.”

“Did he see you?”

“I don't think so.”

Chloe grabbed the blanket.

“The coat. Did you get it?”

Sarah shook her head.

“No.”

Lorenzo glanced between them.

“What coat?”

Chloe hesitated.

The recording.

Gabriel Marchesi.

A conversation about murder.

She had told Sarah because Sarah was the only person she trusted.

But Lorenzo was a stranger.

A stranger with a criminal reputation.

A stranger whose brother might be planning his death.

She studied his face.

“If I tell you something, how do I know you won't hurt me?”

Lorenzo didn't answer immediately.

Then he said, “You don't.”

Sarah looked surprised.

Lorenzo continued.

“You don't know me. And you shouldn't trust me because I own a nightclub or because I can afford expensive lawyers.”

Chloe watched him carefully.

“Then why should I tell you?”

“Only if you decide it's the right thing to do.”

He stepped toward the door.

“But if someone is planning a crime, there are people outside Aaron Miller's department who can investigate it.”

Chloe considered his words.

Then she took a breath.

“Your brother.”

Lorenzo stopped.

“What about him?”

“Gabriel.”

His expression changed.

Chloe continued.

“I heard him talking to Aaron.”

“When?”

“Three nights ago.”

“Where?”

“Aaron's apartment.”

Lorenzo slowly turned around.

“What did they say?”

Chloe closed her eyes.

She remembered the voices coming from Aaron's study.

The smell of expensive whiskey.

The scrape of a chair.

Gabriel's laughter.

And Aaron saying something that had made her blood run cold.

After the funeral, nobody will question who inherits the ports.

She opened her eyes.

“They're planning to kill you.”

Sarah covered her mouth.

Lorenzo remained completely still.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he asked, “Did you record it?”

Chloe nodded.

“Part of it.”

“Where is the recording?”

“In my red coat.”

Lorenzo looked toward Matteo, who had appeared in the doorway.

Matteo's expression darkened.

“Gabriel?”

Lorenzo nodded.

Matteo muttered something in Italian.

Then Chloe remembered another detail.

“Aaron found out I knew.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“Is that why he hurt you?”

Chloe's eyes filled.

“He came home early. He asked why I'd been near his office.”

Her voice broke.

“I told him I was cleaning.”

She stared at the bruises on her wrists.

“He didn't believe me.”

Sarah reached for her hand.

Chloe continued.

“He said I was going to ruin everything. Then he locked me in the bedroom.”

Lorenzo's jaw tightened.

“How did you escape?”

“Through the bathroom window onto the fire escape.”

“You climbed down in this weather?”

Chloe nodded.

“I thought if I stayed, he might kill me.”

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Lorenzo turned to Matteo.

“Get an attorney. Someone who doesn't answer to the Chicago Police Department.”

Matteo nodded.

“And Gabriel?”

Lorenzo looked toward Chloe.

“We do nothing to him until we know exactly what he's planning.”

Then he added, “And nobody goes near that apartment without a lawful plan.”

Chloe stared at him.

“You're not going to hurt Aaron?”

Lorenzo met her eyes.

“I won't pretend I'm a peaceful man, Chloe.”

He paused.

“But I won't make your life more dangerous just to satisfy my anger.”

For the first time, she believed he understood the difference.

Later that morning, Sarah left to speak with the hospital advocate.

Lorenzo remained by the window.

Chloe watched him for several minutes.

“Why are you helping me?”

He looked at the rain.

“Because I once ignored a warning about someone I loved.”

Chloe waited.

“My younger sister, Sofia, told me she was afraid of a man our family trusted.”

His voice lowered.

“I told her he would never hurt her.”

“What happened?”

Lorenzo turned toward her.

“She disappeared.”

Chloe's breath caught.

“How long ago?”

“Seven years.”

“Did you find her?”

His expression became unreadable.

“No.”

Then he looked directly at Chloe.

“And I have spent every day since wondering whether she would still be alive if I had listened.”

Before Chloe could respond, his phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

Lorenzo opened it.

A photograph filled the screen.

It showed Chloe sleeping in her hospital bed.

Taken less than ten minutes earlier.

Beneath it were six words.

YOU CAN'T PROTECT HER FROM EVERYONE.

Lorenzo looked toward the door.

Someone had been inside the hospital.

May you like

Someone close enough to photograph Chloe while she slept.

And whoever it was knew exactly where she was.
