Chapter 8 - THE FIRST REAL SMILE

Six months after the terminal, life began changing.
Slowly.
Not dramatically.
There were no sudden miracles.
No unexpected fortune.
No stranger arriving with a mansion and a perfect solution.
There were ordinary mornings.
Work.
Diapers.
Laundry.
Bills.
And two little girls who were learning to laugh.
I returned to my job as a graphic designer, working remotely.
Natalie helped with childcare.
Rebecca continued handling the divorce.
And gradually, I stopped checking my phone every few minutes.
One Saturday, I took Lily and Grace to a waterfront park.
The weather was beautiful.
The girls sat in their stroller, watching seagulls.
I was buying lemonade when someone spoke behind me.
“Claire?”
I turned.
Captain Daniel Mercer stood a few feet away.
He wore jeans and a navy sweater.
Without the uniform, he looked different.
Younger.
Less intimidating.
More approachable.
“Captain?”
He smiled.
“Daniel is fine.”
I laughed.
“Sorry. Habit.”
He looked toward the stroller.
“Are these the famous twins?”
I smiled.
“Unfortunately, yes.”
He crouched beside them.
“Hello, ladies.”
Grace stared at him.
Lily smiled.
Daniel looked delighted.
“Well, that's encouraging.”
I laughed.
“She smiles at everyone.”
He placed a hand over his heart.
“Let me have this moment.”
For the first time in months, I laughed without feeling guilty.
We talked for twenty minutes.
About the weather.
The harbor.
The girls.
His work.
Nothing serious.
Nothing painful.
When we parted, Daniel said, “It was good seeing you.”
I smiled.
“You too.”
Then he hesitated.
“Claire, would you ever want to get coffee?”
My heart skipped.
I looked at the stroller.
Then back at him.
“I have two babies.”
He smiled.
“I noticed.”
“My life is complicated.”
“I assumed.”
I studied him.
“I'm not ready for anything serious.”
He nodded.
“Then coffee can just be coffee.”
May you like
I smiled.
“Okay.”
